This is Week 10: Preparing for Certification, Licensure, and Beyond of NRNP 6675: PMHNP Care Across the Lifespan II, Walden University. I felt lost when I was prepping for this. Here is my original writing for my Personal Portfolio Writing Sample. Some information has been omitted for privacy reasons. Note that this is only a guide, not a replica of my full paper. Consider reviewing your rubric, as things may change over time. I hope this helps.
Checklist for Portfolio, according to Walden University
Your Portfolio should be clear, concise, and well organized, and it should also include your:
• Personal philosophy statement (1-page)
• Personal goals (short-term and long-term)
• Self-assessment
Personal Philosophy:
I am currently in my graduate program to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. This is my last semester. I hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Western Governors University. I hope to help the undeserving patient population in hopes of helping them find resources for their mental health needs. I hope to use my knowledge as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner to provide comprehensive mental health care for patients suffering from mental health issues. As a psychiatric mental nurse practitioner, I want to educate patients and their care providers about the diagnosis and treatment options for their mental health concerns. I am looking forward to differentiating between abnormal and expected behavior. This will entail analysis of patients’ records to know their diagnosis and create and tailor a treatment plan that meets my patient’s needs.
I earned the desire to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner through several events. As I was growing up, I saw how mental health issues a big concern for many individuals were in my neighborhood. This influenced and sparked my passion for nursing, particularly as a mental health nurse. I hope that someday I will be able to open a practice aimed at serving the geriatric population with mental health issues. I want to impact society in geriatric population care by helping them with the right treatment plan. The care for people with mental health concerns will be aimed at educating them and lowering the number of people with mental health issues in society. The skills I will gain in my class, and my practice as a nurse will help me attain the abovementioned objectives. My philosophy as a psychiatric nurse will guide me to make an essential choice.
Personal goals:
I have personal goals to achieve as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. They are both long-term and short-term. Among the goals is attaining my academic advancement to acquire further knowledge, skills, and information for self-empowerment in dealing with the
ever-changing nursing environment. My short-term goals include passing the boards and obtaining a job as a psychiatric nurse practitioner to further my experience. My long-term goal is that I would like to open my practice someday to serve the senior population.
Short-term goals:
Pass the boards. Every nursing student has the goal of graduating and passing their state boards. This demonstrates the capacity to safely practice nursing care as a registered nurse. I am working towards this goal as it will open the nursing practice step. Getting good results in my state boards will enable me to get a nurse practitioner job, aiding me in gaining out-of-class nursing experience. Get a nurse practitioner job to gain experience. Landing a nurse practitioner job will equip me with the needed field knowledge and experience. As a nurse practitioner, I hope to learn to work with a wide range of patients and offer quality, cost-effective care. I am also looking forward to perfecting my assessment, diagnosis, and prescription of medications, ordering tests, and collaborating with other medical team members to ensure the best treatment plan for the patients. Once I get a nurse practitioner job, I hope it will help me become an excellent medical leader and have firm communication skills to speak to my patients in a way that puts them at ease. Attaining this short-term goal will help me prepare for my long-term objectives.
Long-term goals:
I would like to open my practice someday to serve the geriatrics population. This long-term goal will help in aiding the ever-growing senior population. To achieve this goal, I will consider several factors, such as; staying up to date on all aspects of caring for the elderly, effectively managing common geriatric syndromes, surgical and medical disorders, and neuropsychiatric disorders, enhancing life quality with the aid of the current knowledge on transitions of care, palliative care, and elderly sensory disorder, and getting a fresh perspective with contributions from external sources.
Self-assessment:
Nursing is a satisfying and fulfilling vocation as well as a broad profession. Nursing necessitates a set of fundamental skills and knowledge. These abilities and understanding are critical to my effectiveness as a proficient nurse. As a trained nurse, I am anticipated to exhibit
excellent patient care and observation, professional skills, knowledge, and exercise of safety and health standards, prevention and control of infection, communication skills, medical management, and safeguarding susceptible people, among other things. As a result of the experience gained from the internship and class work, I can work well in groups. I’ve learned empathy and sympathy for patients and my entire family. I understand and appreciate other people’s perspectives, attitudes, and beliefs. The NMC code of conduct and holistic care put out a background of behavior and attitudes that a nurse must exhibit every time, and I am confident I fall into that category. My other qualities are my passion and ability to learn quickly. As a result, I am willing to take action that will assist me in addressing my inadequacies. I possess the physical and emotional fortitude to withstand the rigors of a professional nurse. Regardless of my strong points, there is a need to not only develop my presentation skills but also learn new ones. I need new capabilities like professional, patient care and monitoring, medical administration, urge to strengthen my oral and writing communication, bargaining, and demonstration skills.
I got a 99% from this piece, don’t ask me why; not 100%. This is a shared/ongoing issue with Walden University’s instructor. It was week 10, and I was just ready to be over with the class, so I didn’t follow up on it.
